Maimonides Leadership Group Hears About Jewish Medical Ethics From Chief Rabbi of Beth Din |
Jewish Experience, an organization based in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, under the leadership of Rabbi Tuvia Hoffman has been running a leadership forum for students over the past few months. Approximately 25 students from the Montreal community have been meeting regularly for lectures, discussion groups and the like. The main topic up for discussion: the need for well educated Jewish leaders among students. Recently, Jewish Experience organized a Shabbaton which took place in the De Vimy area. Students spent a Shabbos listening to various noted lecturers as they spoke about the leadership role they can play on campus, and eventually, in their communities. The students stayed with several families in the area where they got to enjoy the Shabbos in a warm and pleasant environment.
On Sunday night the students were treated to a lecture by Rabbi Y.B .Weiss, the chief rabbi of the Beth Din of Monteal, which was followed by a question and answer session. In the lecture, Rabbi Weiss explained the halachic approach to Jewish medical ethics, which led to a deep discussion amongst the students as to the halachic responsibilities that arise in Jewish law when dealing with end of life issues. Rabbi Weiss then took questions from the students.
Following the lecture, the students then heard all about the festival of Chanukah from Rabbi Saul Emanuel, the executive director of the Vaad. Rabbi Emanuel recounted how the Greeks tried to stop the nation of Israel from carrying out the five fundamental mitzvos, including Shabbos, Rosh Chodesh, studying Torah, Bris Milah and Kashrus. Rabbi Emanuel then took questions regarding various issues including Kashrus issues in Montreal and the world over.
