The Jewish Community Council/Vaad Ha’ir of Montreal is proud to announce that our Chairman of the Board, Mr. Saul Deitcher, received a Commemorative Medal for Outstanding Contribution to Canada and fellow Canadians, at a ceremony held on December 10, 2012, in honour of Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee.
Each riding in Canada was invited to submit 30 people with records of outstanding community service. Mr. Deitcher was one of those honoured from the riding of Mount Royal, which is represented in Parliament by former Federal Justice Minister, the Honourable Mr. Irwin Cotler. In his statement before Parliament, Mr. Cotler said this medal was bestowed upon those “who have bettered the human condition and touched the lives of so many.”
Mr. Deitcher has been the Chairman of the Board of the Vaad Ha’ir for over 60 years, and his dedication to the welfare of the Jewish community of Montreal cannot be overstated. In addition to his tireless work at the Vaad, Mr. Deitcher has also “cornered the market” on the mitzvah of bikur cholim. For many years now, Mr. Deitcher has gone every morning to the Jewish General Hospital, where he spends several hours making the rounds and visiting as many patients as possible. Mr. Deitcher insists that he’s the one who benefits from most from these visits, saying, “When I leave the hospital, I feel energized from the time I have spent with these people, and it gives me even more strength for the work I do at the Vaad Ha’ir in the afternoon.”
The Vaad Ha’ir congratulates Mr. Deitcher on an honour well-deserved, and hopes he will continue to serve our community in good health for many years to come.
