Canada’s Kosher Certifier brings “R.E.A.L.” Montreal Bagels to the Kosher Marketplace

If you ask anyone to name a food Montreal is famous for, “bagel,” will probably be the number one answer. Montreal has history of bagel-making that goes back almost 100 years. In fact, Wikipedia even has a separate entry for “Montreal-style bagel.” No other city has this distinction - type in “New York bagel” and you’ll be directed to… plain old bagel.

Now the Montreal bagel is ready to leave the island and migrate to the U.S. and Ontario. R.E.A.L. Bagel En Gros Inc., located in Laval, recently approached the MK - Canada’s Kosher Certifier to bring their products under kosher supervision. “We are looking to expand our sales to the U.S. and the rest of Canada,” explained President & co-owner Etan Jagermann. “Kosher certification will help increase our market share.”

Dealing with the MK - Canada’s Kosher Certifier has been a smooth and easy process. “We first spoke to them in December, and our products should be on shelves with certification by March,” said Mr. Jagermann. “Both Rabbi Emanuel and Rabbi Jaffe have been extremely helpful with all of our needs, as well as Mrs. Eigner in the kashrut department.”

R.E.A.L. Bagel En Gros Inc. make their bagels the old-fashioned way, each individual bagel hand-rolled and 100% wood-oven-baked. At this time, R.E.A.L. Bagel En Gros Inc.’s products come in two varieties – sesame and poppy seed. “85% of the bagel market is sesame, and 10% poppy seed, so these two varieties account for 95% of all bagels sold,” Mr. Jagermann explained. R.E.A.L. Bagel is considering adding plain and whole-wheat bagels in the future, and possibly even a gluten-free bagel that would be baked in a separate facility.

While there are R.E.A.L. Bagel storefronts in the Montreal area, only the R.E.A.L. Bagel En Gros Inc. plant will be certified, and the storefronts will not sell pre-packaged kosher bagels. The bagels will be available in seven WalMart Superstores in the Montreal area. The company hopes to expand their sales to other grocery chains as well. As for their entry to the U.S. market, R.E.A.L. Bagel En Gros Inc. has been listed by the Whole Foods chain in the Boston, MA area. Look for them on store shelves bearing the MK - Canada’s Kosher Certifier logo by the middle of March.
